Committees

SAYLA operates as an all volunteer non-profit organization. In 2015, the committee structure of both the Association and its sister Foundation were reorganized into three committees which each handle a variety of events.  Members interested in working on a committee should e-mail the appropriate committee chair(s) listed below.  Many SAYLA board members began their work for SAYLA as part of a committee, and those interested in working on the board are encouraged to volunteer.

Committee Chairs Description

Social Committee

Josh Hatley

Collanne West

This committee plans and hosts monthly happy hours, networking events, "War Story Wednesdays," and the annual Family Fun Day and Chili Cook Off with the San Antonio Bar Association.  Some of the other specific events regularly planned by this committee include a bar-relief party for July bar takers, a summer weekend trip, and after parties for St. Mary's Docket Call and Distinguished Alumni Dinners.

Professional Development Committee

Michael Ritter

Taylor Beaver

Cassie Matheson

The Professional Development Committee plans and develops Attorney Resources, the Leadership Institute, and the annual Swearing-in Ceremony, along with SAYLA's signature event, the Courthouse Tour and Judicial Reception.  This committee also plans SAYLA monthly CLE luncheons and other CLE programming, and works to implement programs developed by the Texas Young Lawyers Association.

The Courthouse Tour is an essential seminar for young lawyers beginning their practice in Bexar County.  The Tour provides participants instruction on the practical aspects of courthouse procedure.   Immediately following the Courthouse Tour is our Annual Judicial Reception where Judges, lawyers and law students can enjoy hors d’oeuvres, cold beverages and conversation between the judiciary, bar and students outside of the courtroom and classroom.  It is also at the Reception where we honor one Judge as our Honorary Young Lawyer.  Both events occur in late October.

Community Service Committee

Jorge Mares

Fernando Gireud

Cody Graham

The Community Service Committee is charged with a renewed focus in giving back to the Greater San Antonio Area.  Among the events members can become involved are SAYLA's Pro Bono service opportunities, Community Justice Program (CJP) events, and community service events.

Scramble - Each year, SAYLA hosts an annual golf tournament that benefits a local charity as well as the San Antonio Young Lawyers Foundation. Our golf tournament occurs in the spring each year.  Volunteers for the Scramble Sub-committee may e-mail the Community Service Chairs.

Administrative    The SAYLA Executive Board is responsible for all administrative duties of the organization including Publicity, the Website, Grants and Awards, Budgets, and other activities as directed by the President.  Member volunteers are encouraged to contact the SAYLA President to assist with these functions.

Grants & Awards   Every year, SAYLA submits applications for grants from the Texas Young Lawyers Association, the State Bar Foundation, and the American Bar Association.  These grants are meant to support SAYLA activities.  Member volunteers are encouraged to contact the SAYLA President to assist with these functions.
