Volunteer with SALSA’s Housing and Homelessness Program 

Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist tenants with advising clients on the next steps in the eviction appeal process (SALSA will provide training!). Volunteers are free to sign up for the morning or afternoon dockets, one docket, or for the entire day. To prepare for your volunteer experience, SALSA will send you the following:

Dress attire is business casual due to most of our work being done outside of the courtroom. SALSA is set up in the JP1 court lobby where food and drink is permitted, so feel free to bring water, coffee, snacks, etc. If you are planning to volunteer all day or around lunch, you may also bring your lunch. Otherwise, there are several options for food near the courthouse where you can grab food in the afternoon. Please note that the JP1 courthouse is closed from 12pm–1pm.

In most cases at the JP courthouse, clients are managing multiple crises, and the opportunity to speak with an attorney, who can explain the next steps in the process as well as talk through various options and resources for them and their families, can be the deciding factor of whether they will lose housing altogether and prevent them from experiencing homelessness.
